Horology - the science of time keeping devices

I acquired my first clock when I was about 11 years old. I still have it, a time only Ansonia school-house clock. When I was about 13 years old, I cleaned and oiled the movement and refinished the case. The paper on metal dial was rusty, I had no access to a replacement so I removed it entirely, painted the back insides of the case black, painted the hands white. The movement had shiny brass plates that contrasted against the black as did the white hands. Telling the time without the chapter markings or numbers confused some but its really quite easy. 50 years later my wrist watch, a Movado Museum has a plain black dial with a gold spot at the 12 position.
